Alex: Are you sure you were in neutral? If you lower the kickstand while in gear it will kill the motor. Also, I believe the neutral light and the kickstand are wired in series and if the neutral switch is bonko it may be lying to the kickstand switch.
I would first check the neutral bulb. If the bulb is OK, I would find out why it doesn't come on when you are in neutral, and the switch would be very suspect. I would test going backwards from the bulb using a simple test light.
